CORRECT OPERATION

Testing Your Clutch

*EASY*

Periodically test the operation of the your clutch with the following procedure:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground in a well-ventilated outdoor area with the engine ON, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in NEUTRAL.
  2. Activate the foot brake and simultaneously depress the clutch pedal as far as it will travel. Release it about 1/2", then shift the transmission back and forth a few times between 1st and Reverse (for a five speed) or between 1st and 2nd (for a four speed).
  3. If no grinding sound is heard, the clutch is releasing fully and no adjustment is needed. If a grinding sound is heard or the clutch does not disengage, it needs adjustment or repair.
  4. Shift to neutral and fully release the clutch pedal. Check the clutch pedal free travel. The pedal should need to be depressed about 1" from the top position before the clutch components are engaged.
